Total Contact Casting

Total contact casting

total contact casting

The total contact cast is a specific casting technique that is used to heal diabetic foot ulcers by distributing weight along the entire plantar aspect (sole) of the foot. The cast relieves the pressure on the prominent areas of the foot, permitting the ulcers to heal.

How it works

The cast should be applied in such a way that the patient can remain mobile during the treatment of the ulcer. A layer of soft foam is placed on the ulcer before the cast is applied. This creates a space, so no pressure is on the wound which allows it to heal. Padding is added to the rest of the foot with a bar placed on the bottom of the foot to keep weight of the ulcer while standing or walking. The plaster is then molded to the contours of the patient’s foot and leg. This method allows the patient to continue their daily activities while the diabetic foot ulcer is healing.
