Bio-engineered skin
Bio-engineered skin
Bioengineered skin is a biological material made from a non-self-source. The bioengineered skin substitutes used at Wound Care Institute of Texas closely resemble human skin in structure and function, and they can be used temporarily or permanently.
how it works
Since the wound is open and does not have skin on top to protect it, bioengineered skin is designed to temporarily replace the patient’s natural skin barrier while the body heals the wound. Bioengineered skin consists of an outer epidermal layer and/or a dermal layer (the layer of skin between the epidermis and the subcutaneous tissue) embedded into an acellular matrix (a support structure) forming a biological skin substitute.
